Obituary

Doris Marie Franklin – The eldest and much-loved daughter of the late Doris and Thurmond Morgan Sr., passed away peacefully shortly after midnight on Friday, December 22, 2023. Doris studied at The Norfolk State University before becoming a wife and mother. In her 50’s, she, along with her husband Harold, Sr. and daughter Teajuana, played a pivotal role in raising three of her grandchildren in her home while also working for the Portsmouth and Norfolk Commissaries at night over more than 30 years.

Doris brought so many people together whether it was for a spades game or just waiting to hear what she would say next. She will be remembered for always saying what was on her mind whether it would be received well or not, one of the reasons she was cherished by so many. Her favorite things to do were spending time with family and close friends, convincing Derrick Jr. to take her out to the stores, watching football, listening to vinyl records in the kitchen and she especially loved playing with her great granddaughters and her best friend Boston.

Doris is survived by her son, Harold Franklin, Jr; her granddaughter, Moesha Ferguson; her three grandsons, Tariq Brown, Derrick Hurdle, Sr., and London Franklin; her great-grandchildren, Derrick Hurdle, Jr. and Mianna and Shyanne Brown; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Franklin, Sr., and her daughters, Kerona and Teajuana Franklin. The scripture tells us that it is better to be “absent from the body and present with the Lord.”

Doris or “Nanny” as she was affectionately called, will forever be present in the hearts and minds of all that she loved and those who loved her.
