Barbara Jean Copeland passed away peacefully on July 7th 2025 in Portsmouth, VA. Barbara
was predeceased by her husband Samuel Thomas Copeland Sr; her sons Sammy Jr. and Barry
Copeland; her loving siblings Vernon Jr. and Colleen Wallace; and her parents Vernon and Alice
Virginia Wallace. She leaves to cherish her memory her granddaughters Chanell Copeland and
Chantille Scarborough;her daughter in law Pamela Copeland; her dear siblings Willie Mae
Beamon, Roland Wallace, Howard Wallace, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Barbara Jean was a graduate of I. C. Norcom High School. She worked as a personal stylist
and sales clerk at the Famous Millinery in Portsmouth, VA. She styled women all over the US
with some of the most beautiful hats in the fashion industry. Barbara had a reputation that
preceded her. Even after formally retiring, she continued styling women out of her living room.
Barbara will always be remembered for her style and grace, but her beautiful fashions were
simply a reflection of her big heart filled with love and hospitality.
Barbara was a long time member of Noble Street church and The Davidson Circle. She was
also an avid reader of God’s Word. One of her favorite teachings is from Matthew 6:25 where
Christ tells us not to worry about anything. Barbara was also a songstress. She sang at many
events, gatherings, home goings, and community services all over the Tidewater area. She
loved to sing and never shied away from sharing her voice with anyone who needed reminding
that God’s love is always watching over us. Barbara loved traveling to Williamsburg,
Philadelphia and other places along the eastern coast with her late husband Sam, her sister and
daughter in law. Between her work at her church, in the marketplace, and home, her legacy will
surely live on.
Barbara was a devoted wife and mother. We celebrate her reunion with her loving husband and
sons in glory with her Savior.
