In Loving Memory of Mrs. Elinor S. Smith (1930–2025) Mrs. Elinor S. Smith of Portsmouth, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born in 1930 in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Daniel Harper Sutton and Ceanie Rose Arrington Sutton, Elinor was a woman of deep faith, unwavering devotion to her family, and a strong commitment to her community. She and her beloved husband, John Elexandra Smith, shared a life rich with love, travel, and treasured moments. In 1957, they built their family home, which became a place where generations gathered, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Elinor dedicated over 30 years of service to the Portsmouth Public Schools, touching countless lives through her work. After retirement, she found joy in her love of cooking and baking—her home often filled with the warm, inviting aromas of her signature cakes and pies. She delighted in sharing her culinary talents with others. A lifelong member of Rehoboth A.M.E. Church, Elinor joined at an early age and remained a faithful servant throughout her life. She was known as “Mother Elinor Smith” within the church community, offering steadfast support and playing an integral role in the church’s building campaign. Her life was a shining example of Christian service and dedication. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Elexandra Smith, and her brothers, Clyde Sutton and Daniel H. Sutton Jr. She is survived by her nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony and Ivy; nieces Rhonda and Christine; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom carry forward her legacy of love and strength. |
